A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.

False Allegations Begin

The inquest learned how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my apartment."

In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never stolen in the beginning".

Media reports about the alleged taken ashes attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".

The "social media content were really distressing", she said.

Mental Wellbeing Effect

She explained that her son had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".

The teenager was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.

Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his passing.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Online Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.

The inquest heard that one 19-year-old encouraged Kai to end his life.

She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".

She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".

Educational Response

The hearing heard from school personnel at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "heard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's family landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.

The court learned his parents said they did not receive that message.

Formal Conclusion

Senior coroner told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.

Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young child.

"Probably untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.

"On 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was released while inquiries proceeded."

The official determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
